Chemistry at SIUE offers many exciting possibilities for both undergraduates and students seeking the Master of Science degree. The Department and SIUE are committed both to quality education and to creative scholarship. Both undergraduates and graduate students are strongly encouraged to work with the faculty in research projects and other scholarship. The Department presently has 14 faculty, offers an American Chemical Society certified undergraduate program, and has ~100 majors and ~25 MS students. Students may choose from five undergraduate degree programs (see undergraduate handbook on left menu) and a thesis or non thesis M.S. degree program.
We are well equipped for a midsize
non Ph.D. department (see equipment on left menu) and all equipment is
available to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Why come to S.I.U.E. ?For many students we are the "right sized" department. We are big enough to provide a range of degree options, to provide access to highly qualified faculty trained in all the major sub disciplines, to provide experience with major instrumentation, and to involve students in serious research projects; yet we are small enough that each student is an important part of the department and will be taught by professors, not graduate students. We are primarily a teaching institution, rather than a research institution or a small college. Yet we are not exclusively a teaching institution, and the student gets both the benefits of being taught by up to date, research active, faculty who really care about teaching and also the opportunity of participating in a research experience. For many students our approach is more nurturing and suitable than either a big research university or a small college.
ABOUT THE CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT AND THE GRADUATE PROGRAM
The Chemistry Department at SIUE has the faculty, the facilities, and the academic program to meet the needs of those interested in a research oriented Master of Science degree in chemistry. Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The academic backgrounds and interests of the members of the chemistry faculty span a broad range of fields in chemistry and biochemistry that are reflected in their recent publications.
