The pursuit of knowledge in all fields and at all
educational levels is especially nurtured, and valued, in the United States and
in several other parts of the World. Creating new knowledge and training others
to do the same are the hallmarks of our institutions of higher education.
When only training rather than education occurs at graduate and undergraduate
institutions both students and the institutions fall short in their
responsibilities to each other and to society. Teachers, and those
professors who teach, greatly influence the attitudes and behavior of those
they contact in the classroom and in other settings. Effective teachers
of science immerse themselves and their students in developing observational
skills, in learning how to formulate questions, and in gaining insights of
concepts, principles, and the practices of their disciplines. In doing so
they teach and develop skills, disseminate knowledge, and convey their own
attitudes toward science. Effective teachers promote learning and use lectures,
discussions, and grades to create nurturing environments to enable students to
fulfill their human potential.
