Professional Development Sequence in Nursing Management

 

Southern Illinois University School of Nursing offers a 12 credit hour graduate Professional Development Sequence (PDS) in Nursing Management . The program provides basic graduate level knowledge in nursing management without the requirements associated with the pursuit of a graduate degree. Courses taken as part of the PDS may also satisfy a portion of the requirements for the Health Care and Nursing Administration graduate degree.

 

Purpose:

The program provides a foundation in management skills for nurses who function as nurse managers in acute care, primary care, long-term care and community agencies or for nurses interested in pursuing a career in nursing management.

Target Population:

The program is available to the following nurses:

•  nurses with a BSN degree or MSN degree who wish to obtain some nursing

management course work.

•  nurses with a baccalaureate degree or master’s degree (not in nursing) and currently

employed in a nursing management position for at least two of the past five years.

Admission requirements:

Nurses with a minimum of a baccalaureate degree may take the non-degree Professional Development

Sequence in Nursing Management upon admission to the Graduate School as an unclassified student and approval of the program coordinator.

 

Current graduate nursing students in good standing with the Graduate School may enroll in the courses provided they have the approval of the graduate nursing advisor and approval of the program coordinator.

 

Method of Delivery:

Each course is offered 80% via on-line method using the Blackboard platform and with one or two face-to-face meetings per course. One course is offered the first 8 weeks of the semester and a second course is offered the last 8 weeks of the semester.

 

PDS Progression and Completion:

Successful completion of all PDS coursework requires a grade of “C” or higher. Students must successfully complete N.491, Foundations of Nursing Management , in order to progress through the PDS program. The School of Nursing will issue a Certificate of Completion to students successfully completing the program. The courses will appear on an official University transcript.

Required Courses:

 

Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management (3)

Provides an overview of healthcare organizations and roles of nurse managers. Major principles of nursing management are examined. Population – based approach explores community healthcare services.

Prerequisite: Consent of Program Director.

 

 

* Nurs 591 Foundations for the Advanced Leadership Role in Health Care and Nursing Administration (3)

Integration and application of knowledge about management processes and systems to the role of nurse leaders in a variety of health care situations.

Prerequisite: Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management.

 

 

Nurs 493 Human Resource Management for Nurse Leaders (3)

Examines the knowledge and skills for effective human resource management. Content covers recruitment, hiring, retention, performance appraisals, professional development, conflict management, negotiation and labor relations.

Prerequisite: Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management.

 

 

* Nurs 592 Finance, Budgeting and Informatics in Health Care and Nursing Administration (3)

Explores all aspects of finance and budgeting as it applies to health care administration. Integrates informatics into the role of the nurse administrator.

Prerequisite: Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management.

 

* May satisfy a portion of the required graduate courses for the HCNA master’s degree.
