
SCHOOL OF NURSING
Southern Illinois University School of Nursing offers a 12 credit hour undergraduate Option in Nursing Management . The program provides basic level knowledge in nursing management without the requirements associated with the pursuit of a degree. Students are admitted to the Option in Nursing Management in the fall semester only.
Purpose:
The program will provide a foundation in management skills for nurses who function as nurse managers in acute care, primary care, long-term care and community agencies or for nurses interested in pursuing a career in nursing management.
Target Population:
The program is available to nurses with an ADN degree or Diploma in nursing who wish to obtain course work in nursing management.
Admission requirements:
Nurses with an associate degree or diploma in nursing who are not planning to pursue an undergraduate degree may take the Option in Nursing Management upon admission to the University as an unclassified student and approval of the program coordinator.
Method of Delivery:
Each course is offered 80% via on-line method using the Blackboard platform and with
2-3 face-to-face meetings per course. One course is offered the first 8 weeks of the semester and a second course is offered the last 8 weeks of the semester.
Option Progression and Completion:
Successful completion of all Option coursework requires a grade of “C” or higher. The School of Nursing will issue a Certificate of Completion to students successfully completing the program. The courses will appear on an official University transcript.
Textbooks:
Unclassified undergraduate students in the Option in Nursing Management will purchase their textbooks at the University Bookstore.

Required Courses:
Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management (3)
Provides an overview of healthcare organizations and roles of nurse managers. Major principles of nursing management are examined. Population – based approach explores community healthcare services.
Prerequisite: Consent of Program Director. Offered fall semester.
Nurs 492 Nursing Management and Leadership (3)
This course focuses on the nurse manager role and behaviors for leading staff and influencing health care delivery.
Prerequisite: Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management. Offered fall semester.
Nurs 493 Human Resource Management for Nurse Leaders (3)
Examines the knowledge and skills for effective human resource management. Content covers recruitment, hiring, retention, performance appraisals, professional development, conflict management, negotiation and labor relations.
Prerequisite: Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management. Offered spring semester.
Nurs 494 Healthcare Finance, Budgeting and Communications (3)
Focuses on the knowledge and skills for financial management, budgeting, and communication that relate to the role of the nurse manager.
Prerequisite: Nurs 491 Foundations of Nursing Management. Offered spring semester.
