Summer 2008 Activity Descriptions

 

DANCE

Beginning Ballroom Dance
This class will offer basic instruction in the fox trot, polka, waltz and swing. Whether you are new to ballroom dancing, or just need to brush up on some of the basics, this class is for you. Please bring a partner and wear hard-soled shoes.

Intermediate Ballroom Dance
Build on the basics of Beginning Ballroom. Continue to improve your dancing skills in this class. Participants must have previous ballroom dance experience or have completed the Beginning Ballroom Dance class. Wear hard-soled shoes and bring a partner.

Advanced Ballroom Dance
If you are an experienced ballroom dancer and have advanced beyond the basics, these classes are for you. Learn more intricate dance patterns and develop some patterns of your own. Please bring a partner and wear hard-soled shoes.

Swing Dance
This class will offer basic instruction covering the principles of lead and follow, Night-club two-step, and the stationary Cha-Cha. No dance experience required. Please bring a partner and wear hard-soled shoes.

Latin Dance
Add the sophistication of a Latin flair to your dance repertoire as you learn the Salsa, Tango, and Rumba. Little or no ballroom dance experience needed. Bring a partner and hard-soled shoes.

FITNESS AND SPORTS

T’ai Chi Ch’uan
This ancient Chinese exercise form promotes longevity and good health. Learn the basic principles and techniques used to perform this exercise in Beginning T'ai Chi Ch'uan. Refine your techniques and learn additional movements in Advanced T'ai Chi Ch'uan.

LANGUAGE

Basic Japanese Conversation Plus Japanese Culture & Foods
In this class, students will learn and practice basic conversations useful when meeting Japanese people. Conversation for situations experienced while traveling and in the course of everyday life will also be covered. What to say in a variety of situations will be included. This class will also cover Japanese culture and daily foods; some recipes will be included!

Introduction to Modern Greek
Learn the Modern Greek language, including pronunciation, grammar, reading, and writing. Be captivated as you also learn about Greek culture, customs, and religion. This class offers a relaxed, fun environment. A handout fee will be collected at the 1st class, payable to the instructor.

SPECIAL INTEREST

Beginning Duplicate Bridge
Bridge is a game with many faces. It is a social game, a competitive game, and a mental game. It will enhance your thought processes, challenge your mind, and give you a great deal of enjoyment. Bridge offers infinite possibilities, endless competition and challenge, and an open playing environment. Anyone can play bridge. All you need is four people and a deck of cards. Learn the basics of bidding and play of the hand. Practice by playing the game and prepare for years of challenge and enjoyment.

TEST PREPARATION

Applied Food Service Sanitation Certification
This 15-hour course will focus on the latest published set of codes for food handlers adopted by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Completion of this activity qualifies an individual to take a state exam to determine qualifications for certification. A required textbook will be available for purchase at the first class.

Refresher Course for Certified Food Handlers
This 5-hour course will cover updates to the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Food Service Sanitation Code and the Illinois Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act. Specifically, information regarding food borne illnesses will be reviewed. No textbook purchase is required. Handouts will be provided.
