ALUMNI SURVEY FORM

I want to extend to you a personal invitation to explore the excellent opportunities offered through the Department of Economics and Finance at SIUE. Our nationally recognized faculty maintains a proud tradition that combines academic excellence with active scholarship. This combination provides students with the modern tools necessary to succeed in a variety of fields. Indeed, the success of our undergraduate and graduate alumni in business, government, law and academics is testimony to the faculty’s dedication to student achievement both during and beyond their time at SIUE.

The recent combination of Economics and Finance into one department within the School of Business reflects our commitment to meet the challenges of the ever-changing business environment. After only a short time, this merger has allowed us to more effectively provide students with a curriculum that meets the needs of the marketplace.  Not only do we teach smart business practices, we practice them as well!

Courses offered by the Department build and nurture a variety of skills. Students who wish to pursue a traditional liberal arts degree in Economics can do so through the College of Arts and Sciences. This degree provides a firm foundation in economic theory and analytical skills. Students pursuing this degree may choose from several fields of application, such as labor economics, regulatory economics and international economics. For those students pursuing a degree with the School of Business, our Bachelor of Science in Business Economics and Finance combines the professional skills of business with the analytical tools of economics and finance. The Master’s Degree in Economics and Finance offers advanced training in economic and finance theory and builds research skills. Many students in this program earn their Master’s Degree in one short year, receiving valuable on-the-job experience through internships with numerous area companies.

The Department’s faculty continually strive to improve their teaching and to build the curriculum. This commitment is evident by the fact that four of our faculty have won University awards for teaching excellence. Faculty in Economics and Finance are active contributors to curricular developments in the school. From the creation of new courses to the incorporation of modern technologies into the classroom, the faculty is engaged. The faculty also maintains high standards in research. A number of faculty hold office in regional and national professional associations, and several serve as editors of academic publications. The continuous stream of articles published in academic journals, professional publications and media outlets provides ample evidence of the faculty’s scholarly achievements.

In addition to excellence in teaching and scholarship, we apply our knowledge to the everyday world through a variety of consulting activities on the local and even international scene. From telecommunications companies to public libraries to foreign banks, the expertise of our faculty is called upon. In addition, the faculty offers professional development to area teachers and research services to regional business through its Office of Economic Education and Business Research.

This diverse portfolio of activities ensures that the faculty and our students keep abreast of the latest changes in their fields and in the business community. Why not join us and discover the opportunities offered through the study of economics and finance. Call or email me any time, I’d be happy to talk with you.
