Prior to joining the SIUE faculty, Dr. Bock was
an instructor and doctoral candidate at Indiana University in the
Department of Operations and Systems Management where he completed
the Ph.D. in Management Information Systems (1987). He also served
on the faculty of the Indiana Vocational Technical College in the
Department of Computer Science where he taught computer programming
languages, data structures, and systems analysis and design.
His research awards include the 1988 Best Application
Paper and 1992 Best Paper award, both from the Midwest Decision
Sciences Institute. He was also awarded the 1989-90 Carol Kimmel
Award as the Outstanding SIUE Advisor to Student Organizations.
Dr. Bock's primary teaching area is database
management systems including data modeling, database implementation,
database administration, and database programming. This is also
his primary area for consultation within the information systems
industry.
Dr. Bock's current research focuses on developing
a unified theory of conceptual data modeling and design. This longitudinal
program of research addresses how information systems professionals
model the data used by managers in decision making situations. Dr.
Bock has published and presented over 40 papers in professional
journals and at professional conferences, including Decision Sciences,
Communications of the ACM, Journal of Systems and Software, and
the Journal of Database Management, among others. His case book,
Integrated Cases for Managers, was published by Irwin Publishing
Company in 1989. He has contributed invited case problems to several
editions of the Schultheis and Sumner textbook, Management Information
Systems: A Manager's Perspective. He serves on the Editorial Board
in the Management Information Systems area for the Journal of Business
and Economic Perspectives.
Prior to entering academia, Dr. Bock was
a co-owner in a family-owned business in the automotive repair industry
(1980 to 1982). From 1973 to 1979 he served on active duty as a
U.S. Army Officer in the infantry and aviation branches where he
managed helicopter and motor maintenance facilities. After leaving
active military duty, Dr. Bock continued service as an officer in
the U.S. Army Reserve up to his retirement from military service
in 1997 at the rank of lieutenant colonel.
