Financial Assistance
The department supports approximately 18 graduate students with teaching assistantships each semester. Teaching assistants receive a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. If a teaching assistant has had an assistantship for the previous two terms and doesnât not teach in summer, the teaching assistant will receive a tuition waiver for one summer term. In addition, faculty members often provide research assistantships from grants. These grants support student research and provide stipends and tuition waivers comparable to teaching assistantships
During the internship, the student will receive a tuition waiver and monthly stipend. In addition, some companies may hire the student to work more than required 20 hours per week. In that case, the student would receive payment from the company in addition to the normal monthly stipend.
We also encourage students to apply for the SIUE Competitive Graduate Award. This award is a full first-year fellowship for top graduate students. Several biology graduate students recently have received this award. The award is given to students who demonstrate academic promise, with consideration given to diverse applicant pool.
