September 5, 2006 Women's Tennis Heads to Indianapolis Invitational The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s tennis team is full of young players going into the season. With four freshmen recruits, the team is very young but positive. Stephanie Clark (Belleville), Kelsey Laird (Bloomington), Amanda Niebur (Edwardsville) and Marley Coghlan (Granite City) open their first collegiate event at the Indianapolis Invitational. “This (Indianapolis) will be the first event for the new recruits,” said SIUE coach Kyler Updyke. "Starting the season at the Indianapolis tournament will be a good test for the young team. “Several Division II schools will be there, including teams from the east coast we don’t see often,” said Updyke. “We have a very young team and are expecting some positives,” added Updyke. Players rounding out the team include senior Loren Hewitt (Edwardsville), junior Jenny Ruthe (Freeport), sophomore Jayda Gleghor (Springfield) and sophomore Christina Lazo (Centralia). The SIUE women's tennis team has a split schedule, with events during the fall season and the spring season. The Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season and post-season championship will take place in the spring for the first time in 2007. -siue cougars- |
