Four Women’s Tennis Players Named Scholar Athletes
Four Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s tennis players have been named Scholar Athletes by the International Tennis Association (ITA).
Allison Coats (Belleville), Celia Montes (Chicago), Coryn Reich (Newton) and Laura Zeeb (Greenville) were all honored as scholar athletes.
Coats, a senior Nursing major, was a 10-match winner for the Cougars last season playing mostly at No. 6 singles. She also picked up a team-leading 15 wins in doubles action.
Montes, a sophomore Speech Pathology major, competed late in the season and picked up four victories for the Cougars in singles play.
Reich, a senior Mechanical Engineering major, also claimed Scholar Athlete honors last season. She played No. 1 singles for the Cougars this year and picked up 10 wins.
Zeeb, a senior Speech Communications major, also picked up 10 wins for the Cougars playing in the No. 3 singles slot.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
