April 15, 2008 Courtesy of GLVC Sports Information GLVC Announces Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week INDIANAPOLIS - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Angel Royston (St. Louis, Mo.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week and the University of Indianapolis' Amy Schmitz (Normal, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. Royston, a junior sprinter for the Cougars, fell just shy of earning a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the 200-meter at the Lee Calhoun Memorial hosted by Western Illinois over the weekend. She won the 200-meter dash at the event in a time of 25:26. In addition, Royston also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12:12. Royston is currently ranked first in the GLVC in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash this season. SIUE will return to action at the Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday. Schmitz, a senior for the Greyhounds, helped UIndy to the 2008 Indiana Intercollegiates title over the weekend and for her efforts was named the meet's Female Field Athlete of the Year. At the meet, Schmitz captured first place in two events. She won the shot put with a throw of 13.06 meters and won the hammer throw with a mark of 49.11 meters. Schmitz also posted a third-place finish in the discus with a mark of 41.35 meters. UIndy will next compete at the Cardinal Invite in Louisville on Saturday. Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Drury's Kimberly Shigeno and UIndy's Saidat Sanuth. -siue cougars- |
