Butler Hits Automatic Qualifying Mark
          CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Christine Butler now has plans for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
          Butler hit an automatic qualifying mark in the triple jump Saturday with a winning leap of 40 feet, 8.25 inches. She will be in the field for the national championships next month in Walnut, Calif. Butler, a two-time outdoor All-American in the triple jump, hit the distance on her third jump.
          SIUE turned in an impressive performance at the SEMOtion Relays on the campus of Southeast Missouri State. In a dual meet format, SIUE won head-to-head battles with Arkansas State, Memphis, Murray State and Southern Indiana. The Cougars came up two points short of host SE Missouri and 30 points behind Southern Illinois Carbondale.
          The Cougars won four individual events and a relay at the meet.
          The 1,600-meter relay, fresh off a national championship during the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, finished a considerable distance ahead its competitors in running 3:44.80, winning by a full five seconds over SIU Carbondale. That mark, ran by Angel Royston, Juliet Alrich, Coreen Ellis and Deserea Brown, was faster than any 1,600-meter relay on the national list before this weekend.
          Alrich also won the 400-meter dash, winning by nearly a full second over Belmont's Quina Fortune. Her time of 55.37 will likely be among the nation's top seven times nationally.
          Brown also won another event in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:00.61 also is faster than any time nationally posted before this weekend.
          Freshman Jenny Palovcsik was the other winner for the Cougars. She jumped 5 feet, 3 inches in the high jump. She earned the victory by converting her first jump at the first three completed heights at the meet.
