Several Advance to Finals at NCAAs
MANKATO, Minn. – Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Coreen Ellis (St. Louis) posted the fastest time in the preliminaries and will be the pre-race favorite for Saturday's 800-meter finals at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships.
Ellis was one of several SIUE individuals to qualify for Saturday's finals on the campus of Minnesota State-Mankato. Ellis' 800-meter time of 2 minutes, 12.39 seconds broke her own personal record and SIUE's record.
Three SIUE runners qualified for the 400-meter dash finals. Deserea Brown (Flossmoor), Juliet Alrich (Carpentersville) and Angel Royston (Florissant, Mo.) all will compete in Saturday's final. Brown ran the fastest in the preliminaries among the three with a time of 55.93. Alrich, who holds SIUE's school record at 55.91, was .06 behind Brown Friday.
Brown also qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles. Her time of 8.64 was the fifth fastest heading into the finals. Brown's first event of the day, the long jump, netted a 15th-place finish with a jump of 16 feet, 5 inches.
Shelinda Brackett (St. Louis) and Amber Triner (Winfield) did not advance in the 200-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles, respectively.
