SIUE Prepares For Iowa State Classic
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE will undoubtedly be tested this weekend with over 90 different schools from around the nation participating in the Iowa State Classic.
"This will be the biggest and best competition we will face all season, including the NCAA Division II Nationals, said head coach David Astrauskas.
For Astrauskas this weekend represents a opportunity for Deserea Brown (Flossmoor) to stretch herself and possibly automatically qualify for some events.
Brown has already provisionally qualified in four individual events (55 meter dash, 55 meter hurdles, 200 meter dash, and 400 meter dash) and as a member of the SIUE 1,600 meter relay team.
"I think Deserea is ready for this type of competition. More than likely, she will end up chasing someone instead of someone chasing her. It will be good for her," said Astrauskas.
The Iowa State Classic also provides the All-American 1,600 relay team of Angle Royston (Florissant), Coreen Ellis (St. Louis, Mo.), and Juliet Alrich (Carpentersville), and Deserea Brown a chance to improve upon an already impressive time.
Their Great Lakes Valley Conference leading time of 3:48.21 is just two seconds off of the NCAA Championship automatically qualifying time of 3:46.80.
Shelinda Brackett (St. Louis, Mo.) and Amber Triner (Winfield) are also positioned to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships in the 200 meter dash.
In order to provisionally qualify, they both will need to record a time of 25.50. Brackett has already run a 25.51 and Triner a 25.76.
