January 19, 2008 Brown Breaks Record, Provisionally Qualifies At EIU Open CHARLESTON, Ill. - Deserea Brown (Flossmoor) broke the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 600-meter dash record at the Eastern Illinois University Mega Meet at the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse. Not only did the All-American place first in the 600 meter dash, but Brown also broke SIUE's school record for the event. With her time of 1 minute, 35.46 seconds, Brown bested Julia Scherer's 2006 time of 1:36.05. Coming in just behind Brown with a time of 1:36.99, Juliet Alrich (Carpentersville) placed third. With her time of 8.95 in the 60-meter hurdles, Brown continued her good day. The time was good enough to give her an NCAA provisionally qualifying mark. She placed fifth in the event. First-year Cougar Coreen Ellis (St. Louis) won the 800-meter event with a time of 2:19.03. Valery Taylor (Hoffman Estates) and Natalie Patton (St. Louis) also competed in the 800 meter event. Taylor place eighth in 2:30.23) while Patton took 10th in 2:32.39. Kelly Flounders (Homer Glen) placed third in the 3,00-meter run with a time of 10:47.73. The Cougars will now turn their attention to the Illinois College Snow Bird Open in Jacksonville. The meet begins at noon Saturday. -siue cougars- |
