Butler Jumps to All-American Honors
        EMPORIA, Kan. -- Christine Butler (Matteson) placed fifth in the triple jump to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Welch Stadium.
        Butler's second of six jumps resulted in the third best jump in her flight and the fifth best in the two flights at the Championships. The Cougars sophomore leaped 41 feet, 1.5 inches (12.58 meters). Her jump shattered the school record by more than a foot, casting the old record aside set by Jamie Thomas at 40-0.25 in 2004.
        GLVC Athlete of the Year Tairisha Sawyer (Chicago) had a much better day Friday. After missing qualifying marks at 100 and 400 meters Thursday, Sawyer finished seventh in qualfying at 200 meters with a time of 24.11, breaking her own school record of 24.42 set in 2004.
        Sawyer also led the Cougars to the finals of the 1,600-meter relay. Another school record fell for SIUE with a time of 3:43.07. Sawyer was joined by Valerie Simmons (St. Louis), Angel Royston (Florissant, Mo.), and Julia Scherer (Sumner). All four are juniors.
        Holly Noller (Pawnee) placed 10th in the shot put with a throw of 46-3.5 (14.11 meters). It was less than three inches out of eighth place.
        The NCAA Championships end Saturday. The SIUE men's and women's teams will have competitors in nine events.
