Cougars Qualify for Outdoor Nationals
        EDWARDSVILLE - A strong contingent will represent Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Emporia, Kan.
        The Cougars have qualified six female individuals and a women's relay team. The SIUE men qualified six individuals in five different events. The Championships run May 25-27 at Francis G. Welch Stadium and Zonla Witten Track.
        Tairisha Sawyer (Chicago), the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Female Outdoor Athlete of the Year, was the biggest qualifier. She will represent SIUE in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes. Sawyer also will be one of six Cougars who can run in the 1,600-meter relay.
        Deserea Brown (Flossmoor) will compete in the 400-meter dash, the 400-meter hurdles and as a member of the 1,600-meter relay. The other members of the relay squad are Kimetha Williams (Bellevue, Neb.), Angel Royston (Florissant, Mo.), Julia Scherer (Sumner), and Valerie Simmons (St. Louis).
        Holly Noller (Pawnee) also was a double qualifier in the shot and the javelin. Callie Glover (Bartlett) finished with the highest final ranking at No. 3 in the nation in the hammer throw. Christine Butler (Matteson) will compete in the triple jump.
        On the men's side, teammates Phil Freimuth (Effingham) and Dustin Bilbruck (Gillespie) will compete in the javelin.
        Steve Landers (Auburn) will represent the Cougars in the discus. Anthony Weber (Marengo) posted the third best pole vault of the year.
        Runners Brian Taghon (East Moline) and Kyle Rose (Kankakee) will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 400-meter dash, respectively.
