Marks Improve for SIUE Women’s Track and Field
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s track and field team stacked up well against may of the state’s top Division I programs in a meet held this past Saturday at Illinois.
In a meet dominated by Division I foes, the Cougars won two events. Christine Butler (Matteson) won the triple jump with a school-record leap of 40 feet, 4 inches (12.29 meters).
“Christine had a tremendous effort in the triple jump. Her mark currently puts her second in the country, and it was a huge personal best for her. She’s worked really hard this year, and I’m proud of her progression,” said SIUE women’s track and field coach Ben Beyers.
Holly Noller (Pawnee) won the javelin throw with a toss of 141-9 (43.22 meters). Noller’s throw was not her best of the season, but assistant coach Dave Astrauskas said the mark keeps her on track for her goals.
“Holly had a real solid meet; she had three provisional marks in the hammer, shot, and the javelin. Holly has always set high goals for herself, and I know coming into this season she wanted to qualify for three events,” said Astrauskas.
Callie Glover (Bartlett) set a school record in the hammer throw. Her toss of 178-2 (54.30 meters) is the second best throw in the nation among Division II schools.
“Callie is progressing this outdoor season and I’m excited for her to peak at the end of the year,” said Astrauskas. “Callie is currently ranked second in the nation, but we still have some things to work on with her technique.”
SIUE will travel to the Drake Relays Friday and Saturday as well as play host to Saturday’s Cougar Twilight. This will be an opportunity for SIUE’s top runners to post improved times against top-ranked Division II and Division III opponents.
Deserea Brown (Flossmoor) and Tairisha Sawyer (Chicago) already are scheduled in individual events. The Cougars also are scheduled to compete in four different relay events at the Drake Relays.
