SIUE Begins Outdoor Track and Field Season
Following an indoor season that included four individuals and a relay earning All-American status as well as Great Lakes Valley Conference titles for both the women and men, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville track and field team has high hopes for the spring outdoor season.
“We’re really looking forward to beginning our outdoor season. We had a very solid indoor campaign, and now it’s time to set our sights on some new goals for outdoors.” said SIUE women’s coach Ben Beyers.
SIUE begins with the Gatorade Classic at Cape Girardeau, Mo. Beyers said the SEMO Gatorade Classic has always been a competitive meet in the past.
“We’ll be moving some people around in new events and trying to gauge where they might have some ability to help us once we get into the heart of the outdoor season,” he said.
Beyers said he expects indoor All-American Callie Glover (Bartlett) and Anthony Weber (Marengo) to continue from where they left off during the indoor season. Glover was an All-American in the weight throw while Weber earned similar honors in the pole vault.
“We’ve been training very hard, and I know we have a lot of athletes who are sore and stiff,” said Beyers, “What we look at most in these early meets is how we compete as a team. If you see that intensity, everything will come together at the end of the season.”
