February 6, 2006 Glover Adds to Cougars Dominance in Weight Throw Callie Glover (Bartlett) became the latest in the trio of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville throwers to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in the weight throw. Glover tossed the 20-pound weight 53 feet, 11 inches and follows Lindsey DeFevers (Virden) and Holly Noller (Pawnee) as provisional qualifiers for the national meet in March. "Callie has been battling an ankle injury she suffered early in the fall. Her performances are finally starting to get better," said SIUE coach Dave Astrauskas. DeFevers, who ranks No. 6 nationally in the weight throw and is tied for fifth in the shot put, did not better her mark in the weight throw but was able to secure a new school record in the shot put at 46-10. "We're going to continue to train hard and continue to stay focused on bettering our performances each weekend," said Astrauskas. SIUE competed at two events this past weekend. A handful of Cougars competed at the Hoosier Relays while others were down the road at the Tiger Indoor Relays in Greencastle, Ind. "The meet at Indiana had some of the best competition in the nation at any level, and it was a great experience for our athletes to be exposed to that," said SIUE coach Ben Beyers. "I strongly believe that in order for our program to continue to evolve, we need to continue competing at meets like that. It only makes us stronger in the long run." Tairisha Sawyer (Chicago) turned in her best performance of the season at 200 meters in a time of 25.45. "Tai has really been working hard this year so I was thrilled that she was able to get two season bests on Saturday. Her 200-meter dash time is currently ranked eighth in the country, and she just missed qualifying in the 55-meter dash as well." Sawyer's 200-meter time is a provisional qualifying mark to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. Julia Scherer also set a new school record at 600 meters in 1:36.05. SIUE returns to Greencastle, Ind., on Saturday for the DePauw Invitational. "We were able to win this meet on both the men's and women's sides last year. While that is not our utmost goal going into this weekend, getting something like that would be nice at this time of the year," said Beyers. -siue cougars- |
