Track Season Ends on High Note
The 2004 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville outdoor track and field season came to a close last weekend at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships with two student-athletes bringing home All-American honors.
Freshman Jamie Thomas (Blue Island) claimed All-American honors in the both the triple jump and the 100-meter hurdles. Thomas was an All-American recipient in the indoor season as well.
Senior Breanne Steffens (Moline) closed her career at SIUE with an All-American performance in the 1,500-meter run. Steffens was also an All-American during the cross country season.
Christen Carducci (Powell, Ohio), Tairisha Sawyer (Chicago), Valerie Simmons (St. Louis) and Mary Witte (Normal) also represented SIUE in the NCAA Championships in Pomona, Calif.
“Six was the most we have ever had advance to nationals,” Frerker said. “This culminated a great year for the program.”
Even though the men’s squad did not send any individuals to nationals, they still had a successful season as the Cougars were crowned the Great Lakes Valley Conference outdoor champions for the first time in school history. The women’s team finished second in the GLVC outdoor meet this year.
“We’ve had so many firsts this year. From two athletes advancing to the cross country nationals, to the two indoor conference titles, and now having two outdoor All-Americans,” Frerker said. “It was definitely a productive year across the board.”
