Women’s Outdoor Track Places Second at GLVC Championships
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s track and field earned runner-up honors at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Indianapolis.
“The women competed very well,” Coach Darryl Frerker said. “There were only a very few instances when we could have asked for more.”
The Cougars had eight event champions and 13 All-Conference performers. All-GLVC honors are given to the top two in each event.
Tairisha Sawyer (Chicago) was named GLVC Women’s Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year after claiming the individual title in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. She ran the 100 in a school-record time of 11.96 seconds. Her time in the 200 was 24.55.
The Cougars fared well in the 1,500-meter run. Breanne Steffens (East Moline) was crowned as the champion in the event with a time of 4 minutes, 38.78 seconds. Christen Carducci (Powell, Ohio) was right on Steffens’ heels, finishing with a time of 4:38.89 seconds to claim All-GLVC honors. Carducci also earned All-GLVC status in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:10.43.
Steffens is also the individual champion in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 2:17.96.
SIUE also finished one and two in the 100-meter hurdles. Jamie Thomas (Blue Island) came out on top and set a meet record with a time of 14.38. Brittany Reeves (Hanover Park) finished second and garnered All-GLVC honors in the event with a time of 15.11. Thomas was also the champion in the triple jump after posting a distance of 11.63 meters in the event.
Valerie Simmons (St. Louis) was the individual champion in the 400-meter hurdles after registering a school-record time of 1:01.95. Mary Witte’s (Normal) time of 11:10.22 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase also broke a school record and was good for first place in the event.
Holly Noller (Pawnee) was the champion in the javelin with a throw of 37.80 meters. Callie Glover (Bartlett) picked up All-GLVC honors in the shot put after a throw of 13.20 meters.
The Cougars will now wait until Tuesday morning to hear if they will advance any individuals to the NCAA-II Track and Field Championships, which begins May 27 in Pomona, Calif.
