Cougars Claim GLVC Indoor Title
SIU Edwardsville's women's indoor track and field team captured its first ever Great Lakes Valley Conference indoor title on Saturday. The meet was held on the campus of Lewis University.
The Cougars totaled 203 points overall, well ahead of four-time defending champion Lewis (137.50) and Indianapolis (128.50).
Five Cougars earned All-Conference honors by placing in the top-two in their respective event. Three SIUE relay teams also garnered All-Conference accolades.
Jamie Thomas earned All-Conference honors in three events to earn Freshman of the Year honors. She was the GLVC Champion in the 55-meter hurdles (8.21 seconds), 200-meter hurdles (28.68) and the triple jump (11.38 meters). All of her marks broke GLVC Championship records.
Tairisha Sawyer was tabbed All-Conference in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. She provisionally qualified for the NCAA-II Indoor Championships in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.19 seconds.
Breanne Steffens also garnered All-Conference honors in two events. She finished the 800-meter in 2 minutes, 16.94 seconds and clocked a time of 5:05.35 in the mile.
Carrie Carducci finished the 3,000-meter run in 10:34.06 to claim the conference championship in the event. Callie Glover's shot put throw of 46 feet, 6.25 inches was good for All-Conference honors.
SIUE finished first in the 4x400-meter relay and the distance medly. It was second in the 4x200-meter relay.
SIUE head coach Darryl Frerker was honored as GLVC Coach of the Year. Frerker is the fifth coach at SIUE this season to be tabbed Coach of the Year.
