Women’s Track Team Breaks Five School Records
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women’s track team got 2004 off to a great start with five school records falling at two separate meets in Carbondale and Bloomington. SIUE broke records in the 4 X 400-meter relay, the 55-meter hurdles, 200 meters, 20-pound weight throw, and the shot put.
Shevon Shegog (Anchorage, Alaska) broke one record by herself and led off another. Shegog set a new record at 200 meters in a time of 26.28 seconds. She also started the 4 X 400-meter relay, which placed fourth at the Saluki Invitational in a time of 4:00.18. Jenny Jaquez (Aurora), Julia Scherer (Sumner) and Valerie Simmons (St. Louis) joined Shegog on the relay.
Jamie Thomas (Blue Island), a freshman, also broke the school record in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.56 seconds. Thomas is just 0.13 seconds away from a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the event.
Holly Noller (Pawnee), a sophomore, set a new standard in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 12.75 meters (41 feet, 10 inches). Callie Glover (Bartlett), a freshman, set a new record in the shot put at 14.24 meters (46-8 3/4)
“We had what I’d call the best team start we’ve ever had since I’ve been here,” said Coach Darryl Frerker.
SIUE’s next event is Saturday at the Eastern Illinois University Open in Charleston. Frerker said the meet figures to be larger than in year’s past since many of the teams who formerly competed in a meet in Indianapolis are now heading to Eastern Illinois.
“If we don’t start in the fast heat, we’ll certainly be in the next fastest heat for the running events,” said Frerker. “Some are looking for personal records, but we have quite a few looking at NCAA qualifying.”
