May 22, 2003 Carducci Reaches Steeplechase Finals Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Carrie Carducci (Powell, Ohio) had to wait for the second heat to learn her fate for the finals, but her preliminary time of 11 minutes, 10.02 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase was enough to qualify for the finals at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Jenny Jaquez (Aurora), SIUE's hope in the 400-meter hurdles, did not qualify for the finals. She ran a personal best 1:02.12, finished third in her heat but was not among the top eight who made Saturday's final. Carducci ran a career-best time at her home stadium - Korte Stadium in front of a crowd of more than 1,000, many of whom who were cheering her every pass. The top five in each of the two heats in the steeplechase advanced to the finals with the next two best times also advancing to Saturday's final, set for 4:15 p.m. Carducci placed sixth in her heat and needed to wait until the second heat to find out whether she was among the next two best times. She finished with the 11th best time overall. The top eight finishers in Saturday's final will be named All-American.
