Howard Misses Qualifing
for NCAA Finals at 400 Meters

         SAN ANGELO, Texas - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Tamekia Howard (Florissant, Mo.) just missed qualifying for the finals of the 400-meter dash Thursday at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
         Howard ran a school-record time of 54.85 seconds and finished third in her heat. She was the ninth overall with the top eight advancing to Saturday's final round.
         The winner of each of the four qualifying heats and the next four fastest times advanced. Tamara Brudy, of North Dakota State, ran the fastest preliminary time by winning Heat 3 in 53.75.
         SIUE's other hope is Dan Walden (Springfield), who competes in the 800-meter run preliminaries on this evening. This is Walden's second time at the NCAA Division II Championships, which is being held this year on the campus of Angelo State.
