Two Post Provisional Qualifying Marks
for SIUE Women's Track
(EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Mekelle Beck and
Alexis Schweinberg both earned provisional NCAA Division II Championships qualifying marks
with their efforts Saturday at the Lions Invitational.
Beck, a junior from Arenzville (Triopia H.S.) threw 137 feet, 2 inches in the javelin.
If placed on the NCAA Division II performance list before today, the throw would be the ninth
best in the nation. She broke her own school record of 128-6 set last season.
Schweinberg, of Normal (West), bettered her provisional qualifying time in the
400-meter hurdles in a time of 1 minute, 2.65 seconds. That breaks her own school record set
earlier this season at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships at 1:03.38. Her new
time, if added to the list today, would place her ninth in the event.
There were no team scores at the Lions Invitational.
The NCAA does not announce in advance how many student-athletes compete at the NCAA
Championships in any one event. The only way to guarantee placement in the NCAA Championships,
set for May 27-29 in Emporia, Kan., is to surpass the stringent automatic qualifying
standards. A performance list of provisional qualifiers is kept with the NCAA Division II
Committee making the final cut as to how many advance.
