Valenti, Limpert Named Daktronics All-Americans
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Elizabeth Valenti (Overland Park, Kan.) and Kelly Limpert (St. Charles, Mo.), both key members of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's run to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championships, have been honored as All-Americans by Daktronics.
The duo helped SIUE to a 13-5-1 record this season, including a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Division II Tournament's Great Lakes Regional. Valenti was named to the third team while Limpert was selected to the honorable mention team.
"I am very happy to see both honored. They are both very well-deserving," said SIUE coach Lynda Bowers.
The Daktronics All-American team was voted on by the nation's sports information directors among NCAA Division II institutions.
Valenti, a junior midfielder, tied for the team lead in scoring with nine goals and five assists. She finished second in shots with 37. Valenti was named the GLVC's Player of the Week on Oct. 8 when she scored a natural hat trick in a victory over NCAA Tournament-bound Quincy.
"Elizabeth is an All-American in a lot of ways. She's a good student, a good soccer player and a good person. She has earned all of the accolades as we have played our final year of Division II soccer," said Bowers.
Limpert, a marking back, led SIUE with seven assists. The Cougar junior also took 18 shots in 2007.
"Kelly has proven herself in so many games. When she wants to be, she is one of the most aggressive players on the field. She has been our 'go-to' on defense," Bowers said.
Valenti and Limpert are the only SIUE players to earn All-American status other than Janece Friederich, who was named All-American in 1996 and 1998.
