UMSL Upsets No. 15 SIUE 1-0
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Tara Reitz scored in the 26th minute as Missouri-St. Louis upset No. 15-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Soccer Tournament at Korte Stadium.
UMSL, 13-7-2 overall, halted SIUE's 10-game winning streak and earned a spot in the GLVC Tournament finals to be played Sunday. UMSL will face third-seeded Drury, which upset No. 22-ranked Quincy 2-1 in overtime. The winner of the Drury-UMSL game will receive an automatic bid to the 48-team NCAA Tournament, which starts next week.
The Cougars outshot UMSL 10-5 but couldn't find the back of the net. UMSL goalkeepers Mary Behrmann and Amy Boehm combined for five saves.
Reitz scored her eighth goal of the season on an assist by Rachel Lee at 25:07. Reitz punched in the ball from five yards out.
Elizabeth Valenti led SIUE with five shots.
SIUE, 13-4-1 overall, will now await word on a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars were sitting at No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region. The top six teams in the region, as determined by the NCAA, will advance to the national tournament.
