SIUE's Bowers Named GLVC Coach of the Year
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Lynda Bowers, in her fifth season as the head coach of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer, has been named the 2007 Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year.
Bowers, with a career coaching record of 64-27-4, led the women's soccer team to a nine-game winning streak to end the regular season. SIUE, 12-3-1 and ranked No. 16 in the NSCAA/NCAA Division II national poll, surged to the lead in the GLVC and collected the No. 1 seed for the league tournament, which begins Sunday. The Cougars face Saint Joseph's in a quarterfinal game at 1 p.m. With an SIUE win, the Cougars would play host to the tournament semifinals and finals Nov. 2 and 4 at Korte Stadium.
Five SIUE players also were honored by a vote of the league's 14 coaches.
Katie Yearian (Waterloo), Elizabeth Valenti (Overland Park, Kan.), and Kelly Limpert (St. Charles, Mo.) were named to the first team. Correen Roark (Hazelwood, Mo.) and Kelley Humphrey (Edwardsville) were selected to the All-GLVC second team.
Yearian, a senior forward, is the team's second leading scorer with eight goals and five assists. She has nearly tripled her offensive numbers from her first three seasons.
Valenti, a junior midfielder, leads SIUE in scoring with nine goals and five assists. She scored a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) against Quincy in a key GLVC and regional matchup.
Limpert, a junior back, has provided the needed assistance on offense and defense. She has posted six assists this season and helped anchor a defense which has allowed a 1.41 goals against average.
Roark, a sophomore midfielder, is third in scoring for the Cougars. Her five goals and one assist include two game-winning goals.
Humphrey, a sophomore back, has taken two shots this season. Her main assignment is defense, often marking a top opponent defender.
Listed below is the All-GLVC women's soccer team for 2007 and the major award winners.
