October 24, 2007 Cougars Prepare For GLVC Tournament EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- After closing the regular season with a nine game winning streak, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer team is making preparations for the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. As the tournament No. 1 seed, SIUE will host No. 8 seed Saint Joseph's for their GLVC quarterfinal match of the tournament. Sunday at 1:00 pm is the scheduled kick-off for the match. Wrapping up their season with a 1-0 victory over quarterfinals opponent Saint Joseph's, SIUE ended with an overall record of 12-3-1 and 11-2 in GLVC play. Elizabeth Valenti (Overland Park, Kan) and Katie Yearian (Waterloo), both top scores in the GLVC, should continue to lead the Cougar offense in the playoffs. With nine goals and five assists, Valenti is the top scoring threat Cougars. Yearian is close behind with eight goals and five assists. With the solid goal play that Kim Roady (Granite City) and Kaci Backs (Greenville) has provided this year, the Cougars should feel confident in their abilities to stop would be attackers. Roady and Backs have combined for a 1.07 goals against average and 4 shutouts. Despite the fact that SIUE has beaten Saint Joseph's once already this season, SIUE still feel that Sunday's playoff game should not be overlooked. "Last game, they played us pretty tough and with a lot of intensity," said head coach Lynda Bowers. Bowers said that she feels pretty confident in the way that her team is playing, but she wants to make sure her team does not take this game lightly. "Saint Joseph's is playing with a sense of urgency and a lot of passion right now. Teams like that are dangerous and we need to be prepared." -siue cougars- |
