Roark Lifts Cougars in OT
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Correen Roark scored 5:01 into the first overtime period Sunday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer grabbed a 3-2 victory over Indianapolis.
It was the ninth consecutive victory for the 12-3-1 Cougars, now ranked No. 17 nationally in the NSCAA poll. The Cougars secured the No. 1 seed Friday for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Cougars have learned they will play host next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Korte Stadium against Saint Joseph's, the team they defeated to clinch the top seed.
With a win next Sunday, the Cougars also would be the host for the semifinals and finals of the GLVC Tournament November 2 and 4.
The loss for Indianapolis essentially eliminated the Greyhounds from the GLVC Tournament. But Indianapolis wasn't about to go away quietly.
The Greyhounds, 8-10 overall and 6-7 in the GLVC, broke a 0-0 tie at 65:50 when Kacey Loudermilk took a cross from Amanda Reese and scored.
SIUE took the lead with goals in a 25-second time period. Michele Martin headed the ball in off a corner kick from Jennifer Kratzer. It would be Kratzer who would score unassisted just 25 seconds later.
Less than a minute after SIUE grabbed the lead, Indianapolis surged toward the goal and earned a penalty kick, successfully struck by Reese.
The game headed to overtime when SIUE put the game away at 95:01 when Limpert placed her free kick in front of the goal and Roark punched the ball in.
SIUE's nine-game winning streak is its best since 2005 when the team recorded 10 in a row to tie the school record set in 1998.
