Flurry of Scoring Lifts Cougars

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Just when it looked like overtime was a glooming possibility, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville scored three times in a four-minute period late in the second half and hustled past Missouri-St. Louis 5-2.
         Friday's victory was the fifth straight for the Cougars and improved its season record to 8-3-1 and 6-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UMSL fell to 5-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the GLVC.
         Five different players scored for the Cougars. Jenny Kates led the flurry of three goals late in the game that proved to be the game-winning score at 79:09.
         Katie Yearian put the first tally on the scoreboard at 31:04 on a break-away with a pass from Chelsey Johnston. It was the eighth goal of the season for Yearian.
         UMSL evened the score by halftime when Krisie Muesenfachter scored off a deflection from Tara Reitz at 41:23.
         The Tritons took the lead at 49:09 when Rachel Lee recovered the ball from SIUE goalkeeper Kaci Backs and punched it in for a 2-1 score.
         SIUE tied it up at 62:04 when Elizabeth Valenti scored from 15 yards out from Correen Roark, the GLVC's Player of the Week.
         Kates provided the eventual game-winner on a assist by Yearian. It was the start of three goals in nearly four minutes. Michele Martin followed with her fourth of the year at 82:09. Roark scored her third of the season at 83:13.
         SIUE next faces off with Missouri-Rolla Sunday. Game time is noon at Korte Stadium.
