October 3, 2007 SIUE Prepares for UMSL, UM-Rolla EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – After picking up two quality wins over the weekend, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer team is preparing for its games against the University of Missouri-St. Louis and the University of Missouri-Rolla. With victories over then-No. 7 Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine, the Cougars improved their record to 7-3-1 overall and 6-2 in Great Lakes Conference play. With the two wins, SIUE moved into second place in the GLVC. For both games, the spark was provided by GLVC Player of the Week Correen Roark (Hazelwood, Mo.). At the 59th minute of the NKU match, Roark posted a goal. The goal put the Cougars up 2-1, from that point on the cougars never trailed. Kelly Limpert (St. Charles, Mo.) and Katie Yearian (Waterloo) gave the assist to Roark. In the Bellarmine game, Roark scored the game winning goal unassisted in the 66th minute mark. Going into this weekends contest, head coach Lynda Bowers is excited about what she sees from her team. "We are not where we need to be, but I am excited about where we are at. Many of our younger players are getting quality minutes and contributing to our season." The younger players Bowers is talking about include Ashley Davidson (Olathe, Kan.), Sade Akpore (Galesburg), Kiara Akpore (Galesburg), Correen Roark (Hazelwood, Mo.), Kelly Humphrey (Edwardsville), Maria Culp (St. Charles, Mo.), and Catherine Thorpe (Collinsville). First up for the Cougars, is the UMSL. The Friday's match is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. UMSL is coming off a non-conference win against Saginaw Valley State. The Riverwomen are 5-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in GLVC play. Two days later, the Cougars return for Sunday's match against a UM-Rolla team that is hungry for their first GLVC win of the season. The Miners are 3-7-1 overall and 0-5-1 in GLVC actions. For both games, Coach Bowers has singled out the defense as an area of focus. "Although we are winning games, I still don't feel like we are playing at the level I feel we should. I want to see out defense step it up a notch." -siue cougars- |
