September 28, 2007 SIUE Stuns No. 7 Northern Kentucky HIGHLAND HTS., KY. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville handed seventh-ranked Northern Kentucky its first loss of the season Friday with a thrilling 3-2 victory. SIUE improved to 6-3-1 overall and 5-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Northern Kentucky is now 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the GLVC. Northern Kentucky outshot the Cougars 15-11 and led the game early when Morgan Price scored her second goal of the season off a throw-in from the left post. Megan Smith and Lauren Franzen earned a double assist in putting NKU ahead. SIUE came out firing in the second half when freshman Sade Akpore scored her first goal of the season just 1:50 into the second half. Correen Roark put SIUE ahead for good at 58:58. Kelly Limpert started the play off a corner kick, hitting the ball to Katie Yearian, who flicked it over to Roark for the score. Less than five minutes later, Yearian overpowered her defender and scored from nearly 20 yards out past NKU goalkeeper Jenna Kramer. The third SIUE goal would prove to be the game winner as NKU's Ashley Warndorf scored at 82:32. SIUE now heads to Bellarmine for a Sunday noon matchup at Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky. -siue cougars- |
