SIUE Women's Soccer Prepares for Northern Kentucky, Bellarmine

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - After moving into a tie for second place in the Great Lakes Valley conference, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer team looks forward to a two-game road trip against Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine.
With wins this past weekend against UW-Parkside and Lewis, SIUE improved its record to 5-3-1 overall and 4-2 in GLVC play.
The Cougars allowed just one goal in the back-to-back wins. Kim Roady (Granite City) played the entire match against UWP, collecting five saves. Roady and Kaci Backs (Waterloo) combined to collect seven saves in the LU shutout.
Five different Cougars were able to put the ball in the net. Jenny Kates (Florissant, Mo), Jennifer Kratzer (O'Fallon, Mo), Katie Yearian (Waterloo, Ill.), Elizabeth Valenti (Overland Park, Kan), and Kiara Akpore (Galesburg, Ill.) all scored for the Cougars. Valenti, who scored three times and added an assist was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Player of the Week.
Currently tied for first in the GLVC, Northern Kentucky should provide a formidable challenge for the Cougars in Friday's match. NKU, ranked No. 7 nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, is currently on a nine-game winning streak.
"Our game against NKU should be fun. It gives us a chance to prove ourselves against one of the top teams in the conference" said Coach Lynda Bowers.
Game time for the match is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Sunday should be an exciting match for the fans. In both meetings last year, Bellarmine defeated the Cougars. It was Bellarmine that knocked the Cougars out of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament last year.
"We are excited about getting back on the field with Bellarmine. The match should be fun" said Coach Bowers.
         Sunday's match begins noon.
