August 31, 2007 Women's Soccer Explodes for Six Goals BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer offense was in midseason form Friday with a 6-3 victory at Ferris State. The Cougars, now 1-0-1, next travel to second-ranked Grand Valley State for a noon ET Sunday game. Michele Martin (Collinsville) led the way with two goals. Jenny Kates (Florissant, Mo.), Jennifer Kratzer (O'Fallon, Mo.), Kiara Akpore (Galesburg) and Correen Roark (Hazelwood, Mo.) provided the other four goals. The game started out innocent enough as scored following a corner kick at 10:16. It took Ferris State just four seconds to tie the score as Heather O'Keefe scored her third goal of the season. SIUE managed to re-take the lead at 15:31 on Martin's first goal at SIUE, assisted by Elizabeth Valenti (Overland Park, Kan.). Ferris State tied the score 2-2 at the 22-minute mark as Kristie Smilanich scored past SIUE starter Kim Roady. The Cougars would surge to the lead late in the first half as Kratzer and Akpore scored their first goals of the season. Akpore's goal at the 41:12 mark would prove to be the eventual game winner. Smilanich scored six minutes into the second half to cut the lead to 4-3. The Cougars scored twice within three minutes as Martin and Roark finished their goals at the 54- and 57-minute mark. SIUE's Kaci Backs came in at goalkeeper in the second half. The Cougar duo of Roady and Backs equalled Ferris State's Kari Alsager with six saves. It was the most goals SIUE has scored in a game since the 2004 season when it blanked Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Kentucky Wesleyan 6-0. It also is the most goals in a non-conference game since the opening game of the 2001 season when the Cougars tripped up Missouri Southern State 6-1. -siue cougars- |
