Quincy Selected Favorite to Win GLVC Women’s Soccer Crown
Lady Hawks Garner 12 First-Place Votes in Coaches Poll

Indianapolis, Ind. – Quincy University has been selected as the top women’s soccer team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2007. The Lady Hawks, which posted the top league record in 2006, have been picked as the favorite to claim the GLVC Championship in the upcoming year according to the GLVC Women’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll.
Quincy collected 168 total points in the poll as voted on by the conference’s 14 head coaches. The Norse notched 12 first-place votes. The University of Indianapolis, the 2006 GLVC Champion, finished second in the poll with 145 points.
SIU Edwardsville placed third in the poll with 138 points and collected one first-place vote. The Cougars are followed by Northern Kentucky which received 132 points for fourth place.
Bellarmine, which advanced to the final match of the GLVC Tournament in 2006, placed fifth in the poll with 123 total points and the final first-place vote. The Knights were followed by UW-Parkside (114 points), Missouri-St. Louis (94), Rockhurst (93), Drury (78), Lewis (50), Southern Indiana (49), Missouri-Rolla (45), Saint Joseph’s (28) and Kentucky Wesleyan (17).
Quincy (16-5-0, 11-2-0 GLVC), guided by second-year coach Dave Musso, registered a school-record 16 wins in 2006 and also established a new school-record with 13 consecutive wins to open last season’s campaign.
The Lady Hawks lost seven seniors to graduation off last year’s squad but will return a strong nucleus led by sophomore Becky Fleming. The midfielder was the 2006 GLVC Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year after posting a league-best 19 goals and 45 points. She converted five game-winning goals and earned NSCAA/adidas Second-Team All-America honors.
UIndy posted the school’s first GLVC Women’s Soccer Championship in 2006 after defeating Bellarmine, 1-0, in the championship match a year ago. The Greyhounds (17-5-1, 9-4-0 GLVC), advanced to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional final before falling to Grand Valley State, 2-1. The squad set a school record for wins in a season and secured its first bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Head Coach Geoff VanDeusen enters his first season with the Greyhounds after the departure of Drew Roff. VanDeusen, after four years at the helm of Central Missouri, will inherit eight returning starters from last season’s record-breaking squad. Included among the returnees are All-GLVC selections Ashley Seehase, Alli Opfer and Amanda Reese. Seehase and Reese tied for the team-lead in goals a year ago with ten each.
