Aug. 8, 2006 NORTHERN KENTUCKY PICKED AS FAVORITE IN WOMEN'S SOCCER COACHES TAB NORSE AS TOP TEAM IN GLVC INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Northern Kentucky University has been selected as the top women's soccer team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2006. The Norse, the 2005 GLVC Champions, have been picked as the favorite to claim the GLVC Championship in the upcoming year according to the Coaches Preseason Poll. Northern Kentucky collected 168 total points in the poll as voted on by the conference's 14 head coaches. The Norse notched 12 first-place votes. Southern Illinois Edwardsville finished second in the poll with 155 points and one first-place vote. The Norse, guided by Bob Sheehan, captured their sixth GLVC Championship in the past eight seasons in 2005 and compiled a 19-3 record overall and 12-1 mark in conference play. Northern Kentucky fell to Grand Valley State in the championship match of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional to end its year. Last season, five Northern Kentucky players were selected to the All-Great Lakes Regional Team including two underclassmen. Returning in 2006 are First Team All-Great Lakes senior Amy Law (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este) and Second Team All-Great Lakes sophomore Alex Armstrong (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson). Law, a midfielder for the Norse, had 12 goals and seven assists in 2005. Armstrong, a forward and last season's GLVC Freshman of the Year, tallied 11 goals and seven assists. SIU Edwardsville will be paced by senior forward Kristine Armstrong (St. Peters, Mo./Francis Howell North) and senior midfielder Kayla Fromme (New Berlin, Ill./New Berlin). Armstrong was a First Team All-GLVC performer in 2005 and collected 12 goals and two assists. Fromme was a Second Team All-GLVC selection and scored five goals on the year. The duo helped the Cougars to a 17-6 overall record and 11-2 mark in league play. UW-Parkside placed third in the poll with 145 points and was followed by Rockhurst which garnered the final first-place vote and finished with 134 points. Missouri-St. Louis rounded out the top five teams with 114 points. Southern Indiana picked up 109 points to finish sixth in the poll and was followed by Indianapolis (92 points), Drury (84), Bellarmine (76), Saint Joseph's (63), Quincy (55), Lewis (41), Missouri-Rolla (25) and Kentucky Wesleyan (13).
