Women’s Soccer Reaps Many Awards for 1999 Season

(EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.) Four members of the Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville women’s soccer team were honored by the Great Lakes Valley
Conference. Colleen Creamer (St. Louis) was named the Freshman of the
Year, and three other Cougars, Kristi Stedman (Florissant, Mo.), Tasha
Siegel (Collinsville) and Rebecca Mays (Springfield) were named to the
GLVC All-Conference team.

After losing SIUE’s all-time leading scorer and two-time GLVC Player of
the Year, Janece Friederich, the Cougars were picked to finish third in
the conference in the pre-season coaches poll. Coach Brian Korbesmeyer
coached the Cougars to a 13-6 overall record and a 9-2 mark in the GLVC,
which was good enough to earn the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.
Korbesmeyer’s career record now stands at 122-62-17 (.649 winning
percentage). For his efforts, Korbesmeyer was named the GLVC’s Coach of
the Year.

A big reason the Cougars were able to recover from the loss of Friederich
was the emergence of Colleen Creamer, who finished third in the GLVC in
scoring with 13 goals and nine assists (35 points). Creamer had all but
three of her points in conference play and notched two game-winning goals.
Creamer also was named to the second team of the All-Conference squad.

Senior Kristi Stedman and sophomore Tasha Siegel were named to the first
team and junior Rebecca Mays was named to the second team. Stedman served
as the team captain and had five goals and five assists. She also led the
team with three game-winning goals.

Siegel and Mays were defenders that remained mostly in the backfield.
Siegel played the important sweeper position but still managed four goals
and an assist on 14 shots. As the top marking back, it was Mays’ job to
defend the opponent’s top scorer.
