Shumate Places Fifth at Mizzou
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Nicholas Shumate (Overland Park, Kan.) led the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling team this past weekend as the Cougars traveled to Columbia, Mo., to participate in the Mizzou Open.
Unlike the UCM open where the Cougars were unable to place any wrestlers, SIUE had three wrestlers place in the freshman/sophomore division, with another falling just one round away from placing.
Shumate had the highest placing with his fifth-place performance at 141 pounds. Freshman Neil Lopez (Naperville) placed sixth at 133 pounds, and freshman Brian Brooks (Homewood) took sixth place at heavyweight. Eric Pretto (Orland Park) had a strong showing; he missed placing by one round at 157 pounds.
Although coach Patrick McNamara was happy with the improvement over the previous week's performance, he refuses to be satisfied.
"We definitely made some progress from last week, but we still have some work to do, adjustments to make, and technique to work on," said McNamara.
The Cougars are now idle until next Friday when it plays host to Rend Lake. The dual is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
