SIUE Looks for More Intensity and Pace
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling team will host Truman State and Northern Illinois in its last regular season action Sunday.
It will be the final meet of the season as the Cougars prepare for the postseason. The NCAA Midwest Regional Championships is set for March 1 in Indianapolis.
Despite the 1-10 dual meet record, the Cougars have shown promise on the mat.
Freshman Eric Pretto (Orland Park) has compiled a 17-13 record and has been ranked as high as No. 6 nationally by the National Wrestling Coaches Association at 157 pounds.
Tommy Hill (Roxana) has been another bright spot for the Cougars. He has a 13-10 record, including five falls, at 133 pounds.
Coach Pat McNamara said that in order to be successful this weekend he just repeats what has been telling his team all year long.
"Intensity and pace. We've been preaching to our guys that if they wrestle intense and at a high pace they will be successful. We have some guys who have bought in," said McNamara.
The Cougars will need that intensity and pace this weekend. Truman State holds a 2-7 record and will have a warm-up match against Missouri Baptist Wednesday. Northern Illinois enters Sunday's matchup with an 11-7 dual record.
The first whistle for Sunday's meet will be at 2 p.m.
