SIUE Dominates at MacMurray
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling team put a stronghold on the competition at the MacMurray Open over the weekend.
"It wasn't the strongest tournament, but it was what we needed," said SIUE wrestling coach Khris Whelan
SIUE's record included three first-place finishers, three second-place finishers, one third-place finisher, three fourth-place finishers and three sixth-place finishers.
"You could see they were hungry to wrestle," said Whelan of his squad.
Tommy Hill (Roxana) at 125 pounds, Rashad Riley (Hoffman Estates) at 133 pounds and Joe Rujawitz (Belleville) at 157 pounds led the Cougars, each placing first in their respective weight classes.
Hill defeated Robert Dagget who was wrestling unattached at 125 pounds.
"Tommy Hill has dominated most of his opponents. He was quite impressive," said Whelan.
Riley defeated Dan Keller, who was wrestling unattached, at 133, and Rujawitz, who beat unattached Chris Kelly in the finals.
Second-place finishers for the Cougars included Jed Lewis (Norfolk, Neb.) at 149 pounds, John Ficht (Burbank) at 165 pounds and Sean Tyus (Springfield) at 197 pounds.
James Aschenbrenner (Mt. Zion) finished third at 141 while Scott Audo (Glenarm) at 125 pounds and Brandon Cleary (Mahomet) at 184 pounds each finished fourth in their divisions.
