SIUE Wrestling Set For Red and White Scrimmage
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Khris Whelan will get an opportunity to step back from coaching Saturday with the Red and White Scrimmage set for noon at the Vadalabene Center.
Whelan said he will being evaluating as the team goes through its annual process of challenge matches. More than 20 matches will be contested Saturday to determine SIUE's depth chart to start the season.
SIUE's first official match is Nov. 10 at Upper Iowa.
Whelan said there are several weight classes where the challenges will be interesting. Some wrestlers also will have multiple matches en route to garnering the top spot on the depth chart.
Whelan noted a number of weight classes figure to have interesting matches. John Ficht (Burbank) will be challenged by Boise State transfer Derek Lopez (Seattle, Wash.) at 165. Three-year starter Joe Rujawitz (Belleville) faces Jed Lewis (Norfolk, Neb.), a transfer from Missouri, in the 149-pound weight class. At 133 pounds, the Cougars expect a strong match between Rashad Riley (Hoffman Estates) and Larry George (Manteno).
