Wiens Earns Runner-Up Honors
INDIANAPOLIS - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Aaron Wiens (Cicero) placed second as the Cougars placed 13th at the 17-team Midwest Classic. Wiens, a heavyweight, took runner-up honors after losing 2-0 in the championship match to Manchester's Jamie Salazar. Wiens had advanced to the finals with a 16-10 victory over Central Missouri's Steve Berringer, a 5-4 win over Fort Hays State's Andrew Ubben and a 2-1 tiebreaker triumph over Indianapolis' Evan Love, who was the top seed in the division. Zach Stephens (St. Charles, Mo.) placed third at 174 pounds. He defeated Aaron Johnson, of Indianapolis, 4-1. Stephens' lone slip was in the semifinals to Ashland's Tommy Bauer 3-1 in overtime. SIUE scored 30 points in the tournament. Ashland and Adams State tied for the team title with 124 points each. -siue cougars- |
