SIUE Wrestling Team Heads to Indianapolis
The SIUE wrestling team is off to wrestle at the Indianapolis Invitational on Jan. 4 and Jan. 5.
“This is a very important tournament for our team,” said Coach Booker Benford.
The tournament will have a several Division II teams and will give Benford a chance to see how SIUE stacks up against some of the best among NCAA-II wrestlers.
This is the first time that SIUE has attempted to take many wrestlers to the tournament. Benford feels that the Cougars have not had any success in the past because of the limited number of wrestlers that have gone.
The tournament also is very important to the individual wrestlers. Winning at this tournament against the top Division II teams could help a wrestler gain a national ranking, according to Benford.
“We should have some big points from some of the older wrestlers,” said Benford. The Cougar coach is looking for Zach Stephens (St. Charles, Mo.), Aaron Wiens (Cicero), Manny Herrera (Chicago), Omari Johnson (Chicago), and Nathan Graumenz (Vandalia) to have a strong tournament.
