Hemann Crowned Laker Fall Classic Champion
ALLENDALE, Mich. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Ashley Hemann (Highland) erased a six-shot lead by carding a school-record four-under-par 68 Tuesday and was crowned the individual champion at the Laker Fall Classic.
Hemann, a senior, shot an 80 in the first round but roared back in round two, tying Kristi Piepenbrink, of the University of Indianapolis. Piepenbrink recorded back-to-back rounds of 74 at the 36-hole event. Hemann won the playoff between the two golfers.
Hemann's round broke the previous single-round record of 70 set by Katie Farrell during the 2003 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. Hemann also grabbed a share of the 36-hole record set by Kallie Harrison at the 2003 GLVC Tournament.
As a team, SIUE placed seventh with a total of 648. Host Grand Valley State won the tournament with 625.
Hemann was the only individual among the top 40 golfers at the tournament, which featured 19 teams.
Freshman Sheena Collins (Edwardsville) placed 41st with a two-day total of 166. Casey Biddinger (Lafayette, Ind.) finished tied for 42nd with a 167. Olivia Fox (Smithton) and Julie Cline (Decatur) followed with a 168 and 175, respectively. Natalie Connaway, playing as an individual, shot 165.
