SIUE Women's Golf Earns NCAA Regional Bid
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's golf team received its fourth consecutive invitation to the NCAA Division II East Regional Monday.
The Cougars were selected as the No. 5 team in the East Regional. Findlay Country Club will be the host site for the six-team event set for May 1-2. SIUE joins Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Drury, Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky as the teams qualified in the East Region.
"The women worked hard to get this done," SIUE coach Mark Marcuzzo said.
Marcuzzo said his team's depth helped lead the Cougars back to the NCAA Tournament.
"The players push each other hard. That helps us in the tournaments," Marcuzzo said. SIUE bolstered its chances for postseason play after placing third at the Findlay-Outback Steakhouse Women's Invite on April 17-18.
Brittany Hood (Coulterville) leads the team in scoring average heading to the postseason. She holds an 81.9 scoring average. Marcuzzo said he will likely send Hood and teammates Ashley Hemann (Highland), Danielle Kaufmann (Nashville), Julie Cline (Decatur), and Casey Biddinger (Lafayette, Ind.) to the regional championships.
Twenty-four teams and 12 individuals were selected to the NCAA Regionals to be played at four different sites. The top two teams and next two best individuals not with a team from each regional will advance to the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships set for May 10-13 at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich.
