Harrison Ties SIUE 36-Hole Record
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville freshman Kallie Harrison (Decatur) tied the school record for lowest 36 hole score by a Cougar Monday at the Screaming Eagles Women's Golf Classic with a 10-over-par 156.
Harrison finished in a tie for second behind tournament champion Jessica Schneider of DePauw, who won the tournament by four strokes at 152. Harrison shot rounds of 77 and 79, tieing the mark previously set by Katie Farrell and Deanna Bock in 2001.
As a team, SIUE placed seventh at the 12-team tournament with a 36-hole total of 667. DePauw won the tournament with a score of 630. Host Southern Indiana was second at 644.
Scoreboard watchers at the tournament knew that SIUE could well have finished much better than seventh if SIUE's lineup had been altered. Coach Larry Bennett did not place Farrell (Princeton), a senior, in SIUE's five-player lineup and played her as an individual.
Farrell responded with the best back-to-back rounds in two seasons, firing rounds of 78-79 for 157. She finished tied for fourth overall but her scores did not count in SIUE's team results.
Bennett also was pleased with the performance of senior Kacy Gruenkemeyer (Salem). Gruenkemeyer, the defending GLVC individual champion, finished tied for 14th at 163 after a final round 79.
"We're sitting pretty good for the conference championship," said Bennett. "There are a number of good teams in the GLVC."
