Women’s Golf Kicks Off Season at Sunset Hills
The SIUE women’s golf team will begin its season Sunday when it plays host to the two-day Cougar Classic at Sunset Hills Country Club.
Last season, SIUE finished second in the tournament, eight shots back of tournament winner Quincy.
“It’s an advantage playing at Sunset Hills because we are familiar with the course,” Coach Larry Bennett said. “I will be disappointed if we are not in the top three.
Bellarmine and Missouri-St. Louis join Quincy as GLVC foes schedule to play in the tournament. Drury and Truman State are also entered in the 12-team tournament.
Every SIUE player will be entered as the Cougars will field two teams.
“It is going to be good to get everyone on the course to see where we are at,” Bennett said. “It is going to be a competitive tournament that will allow us to evaluate the team.”
For the first time since the program was established in 1998, the team is made up of mostly veterans. Katie Farrell (Princeton) and defending GLVC champion Kacy Grunkemeyer (Salem) are two of the seven seniors on this year’s roster.
“Overall, our team is as deep as ever and we are finally mature,” Bennett said. “The leadership on the team is great, and all our seniors want to go out with a bang.”
